Memorial for Wellman

ARGUABLY Albany’s biggest event on the music calendar, and certainly the most important, kicks off Saturday night to honour one of the region’s most loved and talented musicians.

The sixth annual Glen Wellman Memorial takes place at Centennial Stadium showcasing five of the city’s most popular bands, all of who have donated their time and efforts.

The event, R U OK? Albany Fundraiser 2021 – in Loving Memory of Glen Wellman, has grown in size and popularity since its inception, with founder Dave Morrison, alongside Glen’s sister Linda Wellman Pomery and Albany muso Tress Paisely coordinating the first five events.

Sadly, Morrison passed away six months ago, but the baton of co-coordinator has been passed onto his son Wade, himself a well- known and respected musician.

As Dave’s time was drawing to a close, the dominant last few conversations he had with his son was being involved in the event to honour his good friend Wellman, of which Wade was only too happy to step into.

“It’s a lot of hard work but everybody has only been too happy to assist in any way,” Wade said.

“The musicians want to be involved but don’t want anything in return.

“And most of the musicians knew Glen personally.

“The sound, lighting and stage has also been donated and we are talking a lot of time and generally monetary value.”

The Glen Wellman Memorial has raised almost $30,000 and has donated to such worthwhile causes as Beyond Blue, while last year the funds were given to assist the eastern states bushfire appeal.

This year all raised funds will go to local group, The Depression Network Society.

Wade said Saturday’s event would be even more emotional, combining the passing of Wellman and his father Dave, a stalwart of the Great Southern music scene.

Wade is guitarist and lead singer for one of Albany’s best known bands, Tre Amici, formed in 2016 with Dave as the drummer. The duo have played more than 500 gigs together in different musical guises.

Their musical journey started young, with pictures of a two-year-old Wade asleep next to Dave in his bass drum.

The event runs from 5.30pm to midnight, with a $20 cover charge that includes food and a ticket for a door prize.

Punters are encouraged to bring food platters. It is a 18+ licensed event with raffles for fundraising operating through the night.

The Numbats, Tress-Dam & Co, EXP, Tre Amici and Trash Pandah will all be performing for people to rock out to, whilst also raising awareness for people and families affected by mental health and suicide.
