Kids vie for cancer funds

WALPOLE Primary School students got their creativity hats on earlier this week to take part in the Kids’ Cancer Project’s annual fundraiser challenge.

Teacher Sarah Walker’s year five and six students participated in the Write a Book in a Day competition on Monday to raise money for children’s cancer research.

The Write a Book in a Day initiative began in 2002 as a partnership between The Kids’ Cancer Project and Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth.

“When we found out about the competition, we thought it was something fun and different, so we registered,” Ms Walker said.

“The kids were very excited.”

The annual national event involves students creating a storybook, complete with words, illustrations and binding, of up to 5000 words within 12 hours.

Walpole Primary entered two teams, the Terrific Tingles and the Walpole Wonders, and two stunning storybooks were created.

To qualify for storybook judging, students also fundraised on Tuesday with a fun dress-up day and a book sale.

Storybooks made during the Write a Book in a Day event are donated to hospitals and Ronald McDonald House charity homes around Australia.

More than $157,000 was raised last year through the participation of 630 teams from 187 schools across the country.

“This is a wonderful competition because it stimulates young minds while giving them the opportunity to help other young people,” founder of The Kids’ Cancer Project Col Reynolds OAM said.

“Research is the only way to improve treatments and survival for children with cancer.

“Government funding only stretches so far, so it’s important the community steps up to support kids with this indiscriminate disease.”
