Calling for volunteers

DISABLED Surfers Association Great Southern are looking for volunteers to help surfers in their up-coming Let’s Go Surfing events at Middleton Beach.

President Kerry Oakley said they’re always looking for volunteers to come down.

“The more volunteers we get, the more surfers we encourage with disability to come down and have a go that might not have had a chance to get on a surfboard,” she said.

Ms Oakley said surfing is a great opportunity to get out and experience the beach.

“Surfing is one thing they can do and they feel safe,” she said.

“Some don’t get up on the board … but they are experiencing water on their body.”

Safety measures have been put in place to keep surfers and volunteers safe in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions.

People will need to register their details and have their temperatures taken and hand sanitiser is provided to keep everyone safe and clean.

Ms Oakley is excited for this year’s events and is encouraging people to come down and join in.

“It’s a different world for the surfers; the smiles you see, it is just unbelievable,” she said.

The first event will be held on January 16 at Middleton Beach, with a free barbecue and presentations to follow.

You can register to volunteer via the DSAGS Facebook page, register on the day or for more information call Kerry Oakley on 9841 4141.
